In this brash new comedy, Juan Jose pulls an all-nighter to take his U.S. citizenship exam so he can bring his family to America. Delirious and sleep-deprived, he is visited by a cast of crazy and diverse figures from U.S. history. Created and developed by L.A.’s theatre collective, Culture Clash, American Night is a fresh, theatrical portrait of “Coming to America”.

1871 Los Angeles was a violent, vicious town. Suspected criminals were often hanged by vigilante groups and lawlessness had reached its peak. The Chinese Massacre (Annotated) tells the story of the first race riot in Los Angeles and the dangerous Wild West town that became the metropolis we know today.

La Vida es Sueño (Life is a Dream) is a play about the prince, Segismund. The horoscope of the newborn convinces his father, King Basilio, that his son is destined to bring dishonor and cause his downfall. Basilio confines his son to a tower, where Segismund lives chained like a beast. One day the King relents and Segismund awakes from nightmare to find himself crown prince. Segismund realizes that life is a dream and dreams after all, are only dreams.

…or as we have come to call them, four short tales…

The plays include an excerpt from Bill Ballantyne’s “LIMITED RUN,” a Hamlet on Broadway with Hollywood Stars directed by the evening’s producer Walt Klappert.

Barbara Bragg presents a version of “TEN SLEEP MAIL," a Tale of the American West adapted from her father’s William F Bragg Jr’s award winning short story.

Nance Crawford gives us “BUONA NOTTE, GRANNA SARA,” a Mafia Wedding becomes embarrassing directed by Dyanne Asimow.

Julius Galacki wrote and directs “FIVE TIGERS GO TO THE MOUNTAIN,” a farce, with kung fu, gender bending, time traveling and, within the wackiness, some observations on imperialism, racism and spiritual enlightenment.
